Home Flood Do’s and Don’ts

One disaster that befalls many people every year is flooding. Sometimes it’s just the flooding of the backyard with a little water in one part of the home. At other times this is a massive flood that ruins everything on the bottom floor of your home.

The home flood situation can leave you feeling overwhelmed, but with adequate preparation, you’ll be able to stay calm and act proactively. There are certain things to do and not to do in a home flood situation. Here’s the list.

Do’s

  • Grab emergency supplies in case you need to leave your home because of flood waters.
  • Listen to your local radio station for updates about potential flood situations. Flood situations can escalate quickly so be sure to be constantly monitoring the situation.
  • Move instantly to higher ground if there’s a chance of a flash flood.
  • Store important documents in a water-resistant container.
  • In case the flooding is due to a water source, stop the water at its source either by turning it off or sealing it up.
  • Enter your home only after a professional says that the home is structurally sound.

Don’ts

  • Don’t turn on electricity when the home is flooded, or you might get electrocuted.
  • Don’t clean up before documenting everything. This is good for insurance purposes to show the extent of damage in your house.
  • Don’t use matches or lighter inside the house in case there’s a gas leak as you can get seriously hurt.
  • Don’t get into the flood water unless there’s an emergency. There’s a potential risk of catching a disease from the filthy water or the water could be electrified.
  • Don’t ignore the flood warnings. Evacuate on the very first warning and don’t forget to secure your home before you evacuate.
