Prevent Pipe Freezing

A frozen pipe can burst, and the consequence can be flooding, damaged carpets and furniture and likely even rot and mold. Luckily, you can avoid these with some simple precautions that will ensure you get through winter securely without having to face any plumbing disasters or flooding situations.

Here are a few tips that’ll help you ensure safety.

Be Prepared

Be prepared ahead of time. You may want to have a few blocks of foam to seal the base vents and try keeping an emergency patch kit to seal the burst pine. Also, ensure you know the location of the water shutoff.

Increase the Thermostat

If you have an old house that’s built over a non-insulated crawl space, you may want to increase the thermostat to raise the air temperature to keep pipes from freezing.

Install Fiberglass

Installing Fiberglass can be a great way to prevent your pipes from freezing. Unfaced fiberglass can keep you insulated.

Use a Foam Board

Foam boards can be of massive help. You can use a barrier on the foam board to retain the heat.

Install a Heating Cable

Consider installing a heating cable. But before doing that ensure you have read the instruction manual carefully. Some tapes run along the pipe, and some are wrapped around it. At times, the cable needs to be cut to get it into the desired shape.

Use a Space Heater

Try putting an electric heater close to the pipes to keep the cold away. The goal is not to keep the place comfortable; the goal is to keep the pipes from freezing.

Turn the Water off

Turn off the water when you’re not staying in the house so, in case of the pipes freeze, the spillage will be restricted to the amount of water in the pipe.

These tips will help you in preventing your pipes from freezing.
